Book Buying Habits Tag

#booktag #bibliophile

I am back with another book tag today. I was tagged by the lovely Debbie over at My Eclectic Readsūüôā

Where do you buy your books?

Anywhere I can find them. Usually it will be Amazon however, I purchase American covers from Book Depository. I always scour charity shops as there are loads of hidden gems in them.

Do you ever pre-order books and if so, do you do this in-store or online?

I have and do. I pre-order from Amazon. I currently have about 4 books on pre-order.

On average, how many books do you buy a month?

That depends and varies a lot as I get a lot of books sent to me for review and I use free resources such as bookbub, kindofbooks etc. I would say I purchase a minimum of 2 per month at least.

Do you use your local library?

Unfortunely I do not at the moment as I owe a fine from about 13 years ago which I am paying off. Once I have then I will be for myself and the children.

What is your opinion on library books?

I love them, they are a fantatic way to keep people reading.

How do you feel about second-hand books?

Equally, I like them. They show character. Obviously I don’t want them covered in food etc v

Do you keep your TBR pile on your main bookshelf, or no?

My entire shelf is my the pile

Do you plan to read all of the books you own?

Yes, otherwise I wouldn’t buy them.

What do you do with books you feel you will never read/did not enjoy?

I donate them to charity or give to friends who may enjoy them

Have you ever donated books?

 All the time.

Have you ever been on a book buying ban?

Nope, book prices fluctuate so I often buy them when they are reduced.

Do you feel that you buy too many books?

Never

Thanks for reading and I tag all of you to have a go at this tag challenge. Feel free to drop a link to your post in the comments

It was the end of there holiday romance and she had to go home. Return to her boring life, boring home and boring job. She longed to be with him, to stay in this bubble that they had created over the last two weeks. The night before she was leaving he had told her it was the best time of his life and he had fallen head over heels in love. She felt the same, how could she tear herself away from this?

The train pulled up and he gave her a squeezing big and kissed her lips softly. She cried as she got on the the train and he turned and started to leave.

He heard the train pulling out and he turned to see it leave. After a few minutes he sighed and went to leave. However, there amongst the Steam he saw the outline of a lady, as she walked closer he saw it was her.

Writing Prompt #6 – Diary

750 Words. Flash Fiction.

23.10.16

Dear Diary,

Well what a shit day it has been today. Lee decided that we should not be together anymore. He reckons his girlfriend is suspicious of his behaviour. So she should be the stupid cow! He had ended it before but this time feels different. I haven’t told him about the baby. I haven’t told anyone. I’m 15 years old ffs. My mother is going to go crazy when she finds out. No way am I having an abortion. Not going to happen. Why is everything going so wrong. I wish I’d never met him, I don’t even know if I loved him. Arrogant arsehole! I’m going to go eat some pizza and watch Pitch Perfect, that’ll cheer me up.

01.01.17

Dear Diary

It’s been a while I know but man I have been so poorly. My mum thinks I have had non stop stomach bugs. She even took me to the Doctor who thinks I have something called IBS and certain foods are making me ill. I have a small bump now which is getting harder to hide. I have been saving for the last few months. The pleasure of having a rich family means lots of money available. I am going to run away. I saw Lee a Month ago. He had me against a tree, I missed his touch but he said it was a mistake, I still didn’t tell him about the baby. The sex made me feel good for a while anyway.

26.2.17

Dear Diary

Today is the day! I’m leaving! Packed all my stuff and bought a tent. Not sure where I will go but I’m 16 tomorrow. Legally I am good and being pregnant I look older. I will go see a Dr when I get to where I am going.

06. 5. 17

Dear Diary

I am massive. Took me a while to write again as life got busy. I am staying in a town many miles from where I was. I have a little bedsit and part-time job in a cafe. I have seen the Dr and Midwives. The baby is due around 15th June. Not long to go now. I ran my mum told her I was pregnant and not coming back. She hung up on me and called me a disgrace. Least I know she won’t argue to have me back. I started buying bits of baby stuff. People here have been really helpful with things. An old lady Elsie lives next door and she has knit me alsorts of baby stuff and bought a crib. Maybe life won’t be so bad.

08.07.17

Dear Diary

My life is amazing. I had a baby girl, her name is Elizabeth and she weighed 5lb 3oz. She was so small. I have never felt anything like this. I want to protect her forever. I ran my mum to tell her my news but she wasn’t interested. I don’t understand it, now I’m a mother I couldn’t imagine ever shunning Elizabeth.¬†

I am allowed to go back to my cafe job in a few months. I’ll need the money. They said I can take the baby with me so I don’t have to find childcare. They gave me ¬£1000 when she was born to help out. These people are like a second family. I hope when my angel gets older she finds friends like this. Who needs family.

Writing Prompt #5

You know the drill… or you thought you did. The goalposts moved on this one. 100 words. I didn’t realise and wrote one over 400, so for this I have done 2 different ones for each word count.

Story Number 1 – 407 Words

Riley ran through the thick Forest as quick as his legs could carry him. This had been a great idea, until it wasn’t. Professor Liney had sworn that the machine would work and take him back. What Riley didn’t realise was just how far back he was going.

Opening the hatch he was confronted by a burning red sky barely visible through the dense canopy of the tree above. These trees were something to marvel at, they must have been ancient. Massively thick trunks and towering higher than most of the 4 story buildings in Riley’s town.

After Riley had finished admiring the view and his heart had slowed to a pace that wouldn’t kill him he decided to get out and have a quick walk about. He couldn’t believe the Prof’s machine actually worked, or that he was daft enough to be the first to test it.

Riley looked around. He didn’t recognise any of the plants or flowers that grew around the space he had landed. Most were taller than him standing at least 7 foot tall. The colours were bright and vivid against the greens of the underbrush. Riley checked his watch. He had 18 minutes before the machine would take him back to reality.

There was a noticeable drop in the temperature and silent had descended. He didn’t realise he was aware of the animals and birds until they stopped making any noise. The ground began to quake as he heard a *thud thud thud* of footsteps. The leaves were shaking around him, he knew it was time to leave.

Riley ran back to the machine pod as quickly as he could. Whatever was approaching was getting closer and he didn’t want to be there to face it.

The ground was slippy and he was struggling to stay upright. Luckily he hadn’t gone far, just a few more strides and he would be there.

Once he approached the pod he quickly got in and bolted the door shut. Riley strapped himself into the chair and turned the machine on to signify he was ready to depart. Seconds felt like hours and the machine whirred to life. Across the dashboard the digits 2017 flashed up. Riley was going home. Just as the machine started to fade out he saw a huge T-Rex burst through the trees and head straight towards him. Riley had never been so pleased to be heading back to his world.

Story Number 2 Р95 Words

If you could live forever would you? If time was no object would you work hard to achieve your dreams as soon as possible? Or would you perhaps go live and enjoy life without the worry?

These are the questions Lulu frequently asked herself. You see Lulu was a magician and she could bend time. What she wanted more than anything though was to test how people would like with infinate time. Lulu didn’t know how old she was, she couldn’t remember how she came into being. All she know is what she was, everlasting.¬†

Writing Prompt #3

Day 3 Prompt. Same rules, less than 750 words.

Miles giggled as he peaked through the gap in the wardrobe doors. He couldn’t hear Leila anywhere.¬†

He was sure it had been 10 minutes already but it felt like an eternity in here. The space started to feel stuffy and too warm.

*Creak*

Ah-ha Leila must be close that was definitely one of the floorboards in the hallway outside the room.

*Squeak*

The door opened to the room. Miles’ breathing quickened as he struggled to contain himself. He didn’t dare breathe but he wanted to laugh. The excitement and trepidation was building inside him.

‚Äė”Miles‚ĶWhere are you? I’m coming to find you‚Äô”

Leila sounded really close. Miles realised that perhaps he had hidden in a stupidly obvious place now he had given it some thought. He knew once he had been found though it was time for ice-cream and jelly so he didn’t want to make it too hard.

Leila stopped outside the wardrobe door. Miles stilled and slowed his breathing.

Slowly the door opened.

“Rawwrr” screamed Miles as he jumped out at Leila.

Leila screamed and stumbled backwards, tripping over the chair next to the bed. Miles watched as if it was slow motion, he couldn’t get to her before she fell backwards through the full length mirror. He stood shocked. Leila wasn’t moving and he was scared to go towards her, fearing what he would see.¬†

Miles felt the warm urine run down his leg and make a puddle as his feet. He heard footsteps running up the stairs.

“Oh my god, oh my god ” his mother half scream shouted.¬†

“Gary? Gary? Ring the ambulance quickly. Leila is hurt.

“SHIT, I’m on the phone now” Gary replied.

Miles started to cry, he ran to his bedroom and got under the bed. He was scared, worried and frightened.

After a few minutes he heard his father come in the room.

“Come out Miles, tell me what happened. Your sister is going to get some help, the ambulance is on the way”

Miles sniffled. He didn’t want to come out.¬†

“Please Miles” he father repeated.

Miles slithered from under the bed. His father sat on the bed and patted the space next to him.

“We were playing hide and seek, I jumped out on her and she fell backwards. It was an accident”

Miles told his father. To which his father replied,

“It’s ok Miles. We will stay here until the ambulance men are here.”

The minutes ticked away. Not long after he heard his mother scream. Miles tucked himself into his father. He could hear his mother sobbing, the help had arrived.

His mother came into the bedroom, covered in blood, eyes full of tears.

“It’s too late” she said.

“He killed my girl, he killed my baby girl Gary”

“No, he didn’t it was an accident Laura, she fell he told me” replied Gary.¬†

Laura laughed manically. Walked over to where Miles and Gary sat. The shard of mirror was hidden in her hand. The shard which she plunged into Miles’ chest‚Ķ

That was when Miles woke from his nightmare. He had urinated in his bed again. The nightmare played over and over in his mind since his sister’s death 7 years previous. He heard his mother downstairs humming to the radio while she did breakfast. He got up and headed downstairs.

“Miles, good morning sweetheart. Want some breakfast?” His mother asked.¬†

“I would love some mum, thank you” and he sat at the table thanking God that his nightmare wasn’t real.

Writing Prompt #1

Over in my favourite writing group one of the lovely Admin set us a challenge. To write a shirt piece of flash fiction under 800 words using the above prompt.

I wrote a piece just over 400 words (407).

It’s unedited and I didn’t think about what I wrote. I didn’t have any idea where I was going with it but I enjoyed it non the less.

Here is what I wrote.

Stillness‚Ķit crept around him. Paranoia seeped into his bones. He couldn’t her her, he felt her. A chill ran up his spine, the hairs on his arms stood on end.¬†

Paranoid is what they had called him. Delusional and paranoid. He wasn’t. He sensed the eyes around him. He felt the breath on his neck when he laid in bed in the dark.¬†

He knew they were there. Her in particular. She scared him but soothed him. He knew she whispered to him in the dead of the night. He knew it was her moving things around his room. Why didn’t she show herself?¬†

He believed in them, the pixies. He knew they existed. His grandmother had told him when he was younger. His sister just thought they were fairy tales told by a Kooky old lady but he knew better. He’d seen the light in her eyes.

They were there now, in the dark. He didn’t dare move, he didn’t want to scare them.

He whispered “I know you are there. I can sense you. ¬†Please don’t hide”

He heard tiny footsteps running. His heart sunk, they were leaving him again.

All of a sudden the lamp flicked on. He moved his head slowly to where it sat on the bedside table.

There she was, facing her back to him. He moved forward slowly. Edging closer. She turned, slowly.

He screamed! He didn’t expect her to look like that. Her head bigger than her body, her face distorted like a crazed beast in a horror book. Her mouth, wide‚Ķsharp pointed teeth smiled at him. She hissed.

“Aren’t you glad you wanted to see us now?

He stood shaking, shock registered on his face. Delayed his reaction to run, to hide. A minute or two passed by, his nerve to leave lessened with each second.

He must be crazy, he took a step towards her. She sneered but didn’t make a move towards him.

Was he suppose to fear her? She looked as if she should be feared but she gave off an aura that told him he was safe.

He took more steps towards her so he was at the bedside table.

She looked at him, her eyes sad. He held out the palm of his hand and she walked onto it.

“I won’t hurt you, if you won’t hurt me” the Pixie said.

He replied “I never want to hurt you, you’re safe with me

July Writing Challenges

July Writing Challenges.png

I have a different sort of post for you today. I may have mentioned it briefly before but I am writing a book, well 2 actually but only 1 is my current main focus.

To help me get to grips with it a little more I am taking part in some July challenges.

The first challenge is NaNoWriMo July.

Instead of the usual target of 50k words I have lowered it to 10k. I have attempted to do NaNoWriMo before but always failed, I think this is because the word count was just to unacheivable for me..

There is a book group I am part of on Facebook which have a writer’s group and there are also some from there taking part so the extra support will be great.

For more information on NaNoWriMo you can find it here.

The Facebook group I mentioned is called The Fiction Cafe. Feel free to add yourself.

20170628_091813

My second challenge for July is a Project for 1 Book July.

I am doing option 3 – #GoBigOrGoHome.

For this I have chosen to use my 1 book to write an outline for my novel. I am going to work through a workbook which accompanies a book I recently read along with 2 other books by the same author.

The workbook can be found here

You can find more about One Book July here

20170628_091800

My last challenge is just a simple one for myself.

I am going to write for 30 minutes 3 days a week at a minumum. This is something which I feel  can easily do without committing too much of myself and my time.

20170628_091825

This feels like the perfect time to really get ahead with my writing. I am only just into my 2nd chapter and everything is still taking shape.

Thanks for reading.
