What Lurks Beneath (Part 1)

Today I have the first in a two parter that I wrote for Halloween. It originally started as a flash fiction piece but has evolved into much more.

——————————————————————

The heart of Autumn surrounded us now. The leaves rustled in the bitter breeze that stings my cheeks and makes my eyes water.

I thought agreeing to this trip would be a good thing, I’d imagined a cosy cabin, log fires, long walks and early nights. Well, I couldn’t have been more wrong.

First there was no heating save for the log fire, which also was the only source for heating water, the cabin was old and dusty and looked like it had been picked up from some cheesy Halloween film and put in the middle of this forest. I’m glad I wasn’t here alone otherwise I’d have turned and left by now.

There was however, a beautiful lake which on a night like this shone with a moonlit glow. It looked incredible, inviting.

I’m sure I could see things moving underneath it’s surface but it was clear the atmospheric effect of this cabin was playing tricks with my mind.

I could hear the others playing Monopoly in the main room. Louis loudly declaring how much he was kicking everyone’s arse on the property front, Sarah laughing because despite him owning everything he was broke and she wasn’t and then Ryan who just laughed at them both. My Ryan, the diplomatic one, never caused a scene, always the voice of reason and the one I was head over heels in love with.

Ryan and I had been together now for almost 2 years. We had met through random chance at a college fair when we were in our last year of school. This week was my 18th birthday and this trip was meant for me. Ryan knew I didn’t do massive parties or huge celebrations. Coming to a quiet romantic cabin with our best friends was the perfect gift.

At least it should have been. Leaving Louis to find and book a place may not have been the wisest of ideas. His version of comfort was quite different from mine. Despite this place though I was having a nice time, I just didn’t relish showering in the luke warm water or waking up to know I needed to de-frost the kettle before I could have a morning cuppa.

We were booked for a week and this was our 3rd night. I had to admit though this place was growing on me. It was my birthday tomorrow and we were going to have a barbeque if it wasn’t raining. The last few days had been sunny but cold, perfect walking weather. Louis and Sarah decided a barbeque would be a great idea, I have to say it did sound nice.

I excused myself and went up to bed. I wanted an early night so I could get up for a jog in the morning before everyone else awoke. Running through the surrounding forest with just the birds for company was relaxing. I could happily do this everyday rather than at home where I had to navigate roads and cars on my morning route. Living in the middle of a big city meant we didn’t have places so full of nature like out here.

I felt the alarm vibrating under my pillow, I must have slept great because I don’t remember anything from when I got into bed until now. I reached for my thick dressing gown while attempting to stay hidden under the cover. I grabbed it and quickly whipped it on, then slide my feet into my furry slippers.

I snuck out of the room and made my way to the main living room. Now that we had started to make our presence felt I could definitely see the charm in it. The kitchenette stood off the the left, a simple row of cupboards, cooking stove, fridge and other essentials. To the right a massive open fireplace and an arrangement if mismatched chairs, a sofa and some bean bags. There was a gorgeous real wood coffee table that had two tree trunk legs. To either side of the fireplace was wood stacked up to the ceiling as well as smaller piles scattered around the room, Windows sat next to the tall wood piles. The floor was made from wooden floorboards with thick worn rugs in random colours scattered about. In the centre of the back wall was a huge door and coat rack. I could see the moonlight just hitting the trees. It was still pitch black outside.

I walked over to the fire and added more logs, stoking it to bring up the flames. Thankfully the room wasn’t as cold since the embers had burnt through the night. I filled the kettle and switched it on, grabbing one of the mugs and popping in a teabag and some sugar. I walked over to the one of the windows near the fireplace. This view looked directly over the lake, it looked even more stunning than the night before.

I heard the kettle click off and went to make my drink. I shoved on some wellies, put my thick coat over my dressing gown, grabbed my mug and headed towards the lake. I sat on the bench that sat near the waters edge. Despite been dark the moon let off enough light that I could see easily.

I was sat contemplating the day ahead. Finally 18 years old. Old enough to drink and vote. A proper adult now. Due to start university in a weeks time. Life was good.

It was then I heard the whispers. At first I thought it was just me. I’d have put it down to the wind but there wasn’t even a small breeze this morning. It was still and silent. The whispering seemed to get louder, more frequent. I couldn’t make out any words. I looked around me but I couldn’t see anyone. I then got up and started to walk around the lake, staying in the light. I could hear the whispers getting louder now and tried to follow the sound, it led into the woods. I hesitated following, I mean I was still in my pj’s, who knows what else is out here. But still, I followed.

I came to a small clearing surrounded by the most beautiful wildflowers, the moon shone down into the centre. Everything seemed to sparkle.

The whispering had stopped now. There was no sound not even a bird.

“Hello Juliet” a voice said. I turned around, nothing was there. I couldn’t see anyone. Shadows hiding from the moonlight concealing what lurked in the darkness.

“Don’t be afraid Juliet, we’ve waited a long time for you” the voice spoke.

“Who are you? Where are you?” I replied, my voice shook with nerves. My heart was beating so fast I thought it would jump out of my chest. My hands had gone clammy. I was more than half tempted to to run back to the cabin but something compelled me to stay.

“Juliet, we are the people of the forest. You will see us when your eyes allow us to be seen” the voice said.

“What do you mean? My eyes allow you to be seen? What are you ?” I replied.

“Everything will be revealed in time Juliet. The question you should ask is not who are we, but who are you” the menacing voice replied.

“What do you mean? I’m a human of course. What else could I be?” I had no idea what was going on, were the guys playing a trick on me? Not exactly the way I wanted to start my birthday.

“You my dear child are not pure human, there are things in this world that have been kept from you. But now as you celebrate the day of your birth old magic will pump through your veins. When you are ready to know everything come back to this spot. We will be here waiting. You are not ready yet, don’t fight it when you feel it” the voice faded as it finished it’s words, I knew that whatever it was had gone.

I went back inside confused, sitting on the sofa in front of the fire my body started to warm up. What on earth did it all mean. I’ve never felt normal, at least not in the way that people seemed to look. My father has always kept secrets about my mother,  my heritage and what happened to her. Did this have something to do with her?

I jumped as Ryan put his arms around my shoulders, I hadn’t even heard him come out of the bedroom. “Good Morning birthday girl. Happy birthday” he said, kissing my cheek.

To be continued…..

Writing TN Set Up

I finally got my writing TN set up completed. A while ago I bought a second hand Meadowgate TN from someone who had customised it with ink droplets and it was perfect.

I finished setting it up yesterday when my friend Kirstyanne brought me a NaNoWriMo insert for it.

(I’ll drop shop links below).

I have put in it;

  • A NaNoWriMo insert
  • A general writing insert full of prompts, info, ideas etc

  • A tasks and notes insert to track everything I need to do.
  • My writing journal

I also have some cheetsheets and resources tucked in the back pocket.

I am so happy with it, not just how it functions but the style of it.

Now for the links.

Writing Resources #1

Every budding writer is constantly on the look out for anything that will help them on their journey. Every published author has a method in which they promote that worked from them. More often than not each of these methods is unique and differs from others. As a result it means that finding information can be overwhelming. However, I stumbled across 2 resources which put information out there which is plain, simple and incredibly helpful.

The first resource comes from Eva Deverell.

Eva has a website, Instagram and Pinterest name packed with information and free worksheets and printables.

Website: http://www.eadeverell.com/

The second comes from Megg Geri.

Again Megg has multiple channels in which she shares information However, the website is amazing. I was also lucky enough to win a digital copy of her book ‘Write A Novel In 30 Days’ and I’ve found it amazing. It really gets you looking not just at methods of writing but at why you write and what inspires you. I would absolutely love this in a print version.

Website: https://megg.me/

Link to the book: https://gumroad.com/l/writeanovelin30days#

Here is a little look at the things I printed from both sites.

As you can see there are many different forms of information.

Hope you find these as helpful as I have.

Autumnal Inspiration: My Current Writing Project

The leaves around me are starting to turn as Autumn is starting to make it’s presence felt.

Until recently I have been working on a Psychological Thriller but I needed a break from it while I figure out it’s direction. While I take this break I got started on a little paranormal story I’ve been thinking about for a while.

It goes in perfectly to this time of year as I wanted to set it at the start of Autumn. Today I sat scribbling away enjoying the last of the late summer Sun, there was a chilly bite in the air that came from a subtle breeze and I felt inspired.

My new story follows a Witch by the name of Freya who is hiding from her Coven. Freya is only young and has a lot to learn but she is incredibly gifted.

We journey with her through many ups and downs as she adjusts to a new life in a sleepy town where not everything is as it seems.

I am really enjoying writing this and doing research as I want it to be as authentic as possible to the Wiccan religion.

It’s also been really nice to work on something that isn’t as dark as my psych thriller.

Hopefully I will be able to share something with you all soon.

Thank you for reading.

Writing Prompt #8

Less than 750 words. Flash Fiction. This is unedited and 236 words.

Life. It isn’t as infinite as we are led to believe when we are younger. Carefree, fearfree and living how we see fit. At least that’s how I had lived. Yes that’s right, had lived, meaning that I know longer live. I am here in spirit and consciousness but not in body. No, my body went until the ground little over a week ago.
I watched my friends and family say goodbye, tears flooding their faces. They all kept mumbling about what a waste it was, how senseless an act, how I had so much to live for.

They all thought it, they couldn’t rationalise but then why would they. They hadn’t lived like I had. On the outside I was fun, loved, had friends and most of all, I was happy.
That wasn’t the case on the inside though. I lived with secrets, dark dark secrets. Those secrets ate away at my soul and made my head cloudy with grey thoughts. I had to escape it all. The fear, the regret and the possibility that they would discover the real me.

Now I don’t feel anything. I float among the ethereal clouds with all the other lost souls. I don’t have regret, I don’t have fear and I don’t feel bad. I suppose you are wondering what happened, why am I now this way. Well you shall find out, this is the story of me.

Writing Prompt #6 – Diary

750 Words. Flash Fiction.

23.10.16

Dear Diary,

Well what a shit day it has been today. Lee decided that we should not be together anymore. He reckons his girlfriend is suspicious of his behaviour. So she should be the stupid cow! He had ended it before but this time feels different. I haven’t told him about the baby. I haven’t told anyone. I’m 15 years old ffs. My mother is going to go crazy when she finds out. No way am I having an abortion. Not going to happen. Why is everything going so wrong. I wish I’d never met him, I don’t even know if I loved him. Arrogant arsehole! I’m going to go eat some pizza and watch Pitch Perfect, that’ll cheer me up.

01.01.17

Dear Diary

It’s been a while I know but man I have been so poorly. My mum thinks I have had non stop stomach bugs. She even took me to the Doctor who thinks I have something called IBS and certain foods are making me ill. I have a small bump now which is getting harder to hide. I have been saving for the last few months. The pleasure of having a rich family means lots of money available. I am going to run away. I saw Lee a Month ago. He had me against a tree, I missed his touch but he said it was a mistake, I still didn’t tell him about the baby. The sex made me feel good for a while anyway.

26.2.17

Dear Diary

Today is the day! I’m leaving! Packed all my stuff and bought a tent. Not sure where I will go but I’m 16 tomorrow. Legally I am good and being pregnant I look older. I will go see a Dr when I get to where I am going.

06. 5. 17

Dear Diary

I am massive. Took me a while to write again as life got busy. I am staying in a town many miles from where I was. I have a little bedsit and part-time job in a cafe. I have seen the Dr and Midwives. The baby is due around 15th June. Not long to go now. I ran my mum told her I was pregnant and not coming back. She hung up on me and called me a disgrace. Least I know she won’t argue to have me back. I started buying bits of baby stuff. People here have been really helpful with things. An old lady Elsie lives next door and she has knit me alsorts of baby stuff and bought a crib. Maybe life won’t be so bad.

08.07.17

Dear Diary

My life is amazing. I had a baby girl, her name is Elizabeth and she weighed 5lb 3oz. She was so small. I have never felt anything like this. I want to protect her forever. I ran my mum to tell her my news but she wasn’t interested. I don’t understand it, now I’m a mother I couldn’t imagine ever shunning Elizabeth.

I am allowed to go back to my cafe job in a few months. I’ll need the money. They said I can take the baby with me so I don’t have to find childcare. They gave me £1000 when she was born to help out. These people are like a second family. I hope when my angel gets older she finds friends like this. Who needs family.

Writing Prompt #5

You know the drill… or you thought you did. The goalposts moved on this one. 100 words. I didn’t realise and wrote one over 400, so for this I have done 2 different ones for each word count.

Story Number 1 – 407 Words

Riley ran through the thick Forest as quick as his legs could carry him. This had been a great idea, until it wasn’t. Professor Liney had sworn that the machine would work and take him back. What Riley didn’t realise was just how far back he was going.

Opening the hatch he was confronted by a burning red sky barely visible through the dense canopy of the tree above. These trees were something to marvel at, they must have been ancient. Massively thick trunks and towering higher than most of the 4 story buildings in Riley’s town.

After Riley had finished admiring the view and his heart had slowed to a pace that wouldn’t kill him he decided to get out and have a quick walk about. He couldn’t believe the Prof’s machine actually worked, or that he was daft enough to be the first to test it.

Riley looked around. He didn’t recognise any of the plants or flowers that grew around the space he had landed. Most were taller than him standing at least 7 foot tall. The colours were bright and vivid against the greens of the underbrush. Riley checked his watch. He had 18 minutes before the machine would take him back to reality.

There was a noticeable drop in the temperature and silent had descended. He didn’t realise he was aware of the animals and birds until they stopped making any noise. The ground began to quake as he heard a *thud thud thud* of footsteps. The leaves were shaking around him, he knew it was time to leave.

Riley ran back to the machine pod as quickly as he could. Whatever was approaching was getting closer and he didn’t want to be there to face it.

The ground was slippy and he was struggling to stay upright. Luckily he hadn’t gone far, just a few more strides and he would be there.

Once he approached the pod he quickly got in and bolted the door shut. Riley strapped himself into the chair and turned the machine on to signify he was ready to depart. Seconds felt like hours and the machine whirred to life. Across the dashboard the digits 2017 flashed up. Riley was going home. Just as the machine started to fade out he saw a huge T-Rex burst through the trees and head straight towards him. Riley had never been so pleased to be heading back to his world.

Story Number 2 – 95 Words

If you could live forever would you? If time was no object would you work hard to achieve your dreams as soon as possible? Or would you perhaps go live and enjoy life without the worry?

These are the questions Lulu frequently asked herself. You see Lulu was a magician and she could bend time. What she wanted more than anything though was to test how people would like with infinate time. Lulu didn’t know how old she was, she couldn’t remember how she came into being. All she know is what she was, everlasting.

Writing Prompt #4

I think you all know the rules by now. Less than 750 words, flash fiction.

The light fractured into pieces along the wall. The curtains pulled shut allowed little light into the room, but enough to notice every car that passed.

I lay on the bed trying to focus my breathing. To let my subconscious take hold. I was told that meditating will help, easier said than done when you’re stuck in a motel room right on the highway. So much for peace.

I still had the hospital gown on that I’d escaped in. My feet red raw and bleeding. Walking for miles barefoot in this climate wasn’t ideal. The dusty dry roads scattered with pebbles, stones and Sandy grit.

I’d been here now for 2 hours, I snuck in the room through the bathroom window, I shouldn’t be here and I hoped that no one would rent to room tonight. There was some small snacks in the fridge which I had eaten when I got here but now my stomach groaned in protest at the amount of crap I’d consumed.

I needed to get away from the doctors. They were just doing there job, I get that but I needed space to work through this. I was told it was an accident. I was walking down the road when a car came ploughing into me which had left me in a coma for 13 days. When I awoke I had no idea who I was or where I was from. They had not found any I.D on me and my DNA wasn’t on record. I was a non-dead Jane Doe.

I kept getting flashes of memories but never enough to grasp anything from. I had the feeling that may be this was the universe telling me my life was bad before and I was given a fresh start to reinvent myself. I could be anyone. I could have children or a husband, I could be a serial killer. I had no idea.

The only identifying thing I had were the tattoo’s that were down my arms, shoulders and back. I wondered what my inspiration had been when I got them. I liked them, tomorrow I am going to see if any of the studios in town recognise the work.

I figured if I couldn’t meditate then I should at least try to get some sleep. I blocked the door with the side unit so at least I would have time to get out should someone try and enter.

I got into the bed and it didn’t take long for me to fall into a deep sleep.

I woke to the sound of a car pulling up. It was just getting light and the wall clock showed it was 5.53am.

I got out of the bed, straightened the covers and ate some more snacks, filling my coat pocket with more. I was grateful I had the coat, at least people didn’t stare so blantely when I walked past.

I crawled out of the bathroom window the way I had came and walked around to the main building. It was still and quiet with the exception of a lady dressed in a business suit getting into her car.

I walked over to her and said hello.

” Oh, hello” she replied

I’m sorry to bother you but I was wondering if you were heading into town? My friends thought it was funny to take my shoes and I’d rather not walk back barefoot again’

She looked down at my feet, glazing over my long coat.

‘Urm, sure. Yes I can take you there. I have a pair of old squash shoes if you would like to wear them?’

‘That would be very kind of you, thank you’

The lady walked to the boot of her car and got some old battered white shoes out and have them to me. I opened the passenger door and slide in. The car smelt like fresh pine and was immaculately clean.

We drove in silence, I didn’t know what to say and she clearly didn’t either. When she pulled up to the road I got out.

‘Thank you for the lift.’ I said poking my head through the window.

‘You’re welcome, sorry I didn’t catch your name’

I thought for second before replying,

‘My name is Andrea, Andrea Riley’

And with that I turned and walked away. That was my name now, one I had claimed until I could find out who I really was.

Thanks for reading and as always feel free to pop your story in the comments below or link to your blog post.

Writing Prompt #3

Day 3 Prompt. Same rules, less than 750 words.

Miles giggled as he peaked through the gap in the wardrobe doors. He couldn’t hear Leila anywhere.

He was sure it had been 10 minutes already but it felt like an eternity in here. The space started to feel stuffy and too warm.

*Creak*

Ah-ha Leila must be close that was definitely one of the floorboards in the hallway outside the room.

*Squeak*

The door opened to the room. Miles’ breathing quickened as he struggled to contain himself. He didn’t dare breathe but he wanted to laugh. The excitement and trepidation was building inside him.

‘”Miles…Where are you? I’m coming to find you’”

Leila sounded really close. Miles realised that perhaps he had hidden in a stupidly obvious place now he had given it some thought. He knew once he had been found though it was time for ice-cream and jelly so he didn’t want to make it too hard.

Leila stopped outside the wardrobe door. Miles stilled and slowed his breathing.

Slowly the door opened.

“Rawwrr” screamed Miles as he jumped out at Leila.

Leila screamed and stumbled backwards, tripping over the chair next to the bed. Miles watched as if it was slow motion, he couldn’t get to her before she fell backwards through the full length mirror. He stood shocked. Leila wasn’t moving and he was scared to go towards her, fearing what he would see.

Miles felt the warm urine run down his leg and make a puddle as his feet. He heard footsteps running up the stairs.

“Oh my god, oh my god ” his mother half scream shouted.

“Gary? Gary? Ring the ambulance quickly. Leila is hurt.

“SHIT, I’m on the phone now” Gary replied.

Miles started to cry, he ran to his bedroom and got under the bed. He was scared, worried and frightened.

After a few minutes he heard his father come in the room.

“Come out Miles, tell me what happened. Your sister is going to get some help, the ambulance is on the way”

Miles sniffled. He didn’t want to come out.

“Please Miles” he father repeated.

Miles slithered from under the bed. His father sat on the bed and patted the space next to him.

“We were playing hide and seek, I jumped out on her and she fell backwards. It was an accident”

Miles told his father. To which his father replied,

“It’s ok Miles. We will stay here until the ambulance men are here.”

The minutes ticked away. Not long after he heard his mother scream. Miles tucked himself into his father. He could hear his mother sobbing, the help had arrived.

His mother came into the bedroom, covered in blood, eyes full of tears.

“It’s too late” she said.

“He killed my girl, he killed my baby girl Gary”

“No, he didn’t it was an accident Laura, she fell he told me” replied Gary.

Laura laughed manically. Walked over to where Miles and Gary sat. The shard of mirror was hidden in her hand. The shard which she plunged into Miles’ chest…

That was when Miles woke from his nightmare. He had urinated in his bed again. The nightmare played over and over in his mind since his sister’s death 7 years previous. He heard his mother downstairs humming to the radio while she did breakfast. He got up and headed downstairs.

“Miles, good morning sweetheart. Want some breakfast?” His mother asked.

“I would love some mum, thank you” and he sat at the table thanking God that his nightmare wasn’t real.
