Planner Girls Collective: My Favourite Books

Today’s PGC takes a little detour from the usual planner orientated posts we normally have. Today we get to discuss something even closer to my heart…books!

Obviously the title says what the post is about, my favourite books.

I will begin with the book which has been a favourite since childhood.

The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe by C.S Lewis. I adore this book, while I enjoy the entire series this one is my ultimate. Not only do I love the book I love the old 80’s series and the modern films.

There is something magical reading about Narnia, the wish to want to be there with them and experience it all. To stroke Aslan’s beautiful mane.

It never fails to make me feel good.

Next up we have The Picture Of Dorian Gray. Admittedly I watched the film before reading the book and I loved it. Then I read the book and loves it more. Oscar Wilde’s play on words is amazing. He really knows how to tell a story.

A more modern and recent addition is that of Six of Crows and Crooked Kingdom. I just love this, I feel invested in the characters. I got emotional about things and really felt the scenes playing out in the head.

Another favourite of mine is Me Before You by Jojo Moyes. This book made me heartbroken, honestly I felt it all. I was so angry with him at first. I really felt like I was part of it.

Another which I love and have read a few times now is The Host by Stephanie Meyer. The concept just blew me away. Even though there is heavy critiscm I love it. I really wanted a sequel to this book so badly.

The Sharani series by Kevin Nielsen is a more recent addition. After been given a copy to review I bought all the others and the novella in the series and devoured them within 4 days.

So there you have my absolute favourites. There are many more books I love but those are the top of my head favs.

Book Review: Gambit by C.L Denault

*Disclaimer: I received this book free of charge from the publisher via NetGallery in exchange for my honest review.*

Author: C.L Denault

Publisher: REUTS Publications

Publication Date: April 2015

Format: Kindle, Paperback

Genre: Fantasy

Pages: 556

In Earth’s battle-ridden future, humans have evolved. Those with extraordinary skills rise to power and fame. Those without live in poverty.

Sixteen-year-old Willow Kent believed she was normal. But when a genetically-advanced military officer shows up in her village and questions her identity, long-buried secrets begin to emerge. With remarkable skills and a shocking genetic code the Core and its enemies will do anything to obtain, Willow suddenly finds the freedom she craves slipping through her fingers.

Greed, corruption, and genetic tampering threaten every aspect of her existence as she’s thrust, unwilling, into the sophisticated culture of the elite Core city. To ensure peace, she must leave the past behind, marry a man she’s never met, and submit to the authority of a relentless officer with a hidden agenda of his own. Her life has become a dangerous game. How much will she sacrifice in order to win?

Honestly, I loved this book. It had me hooked early on and I struggled to put it down. The lead character Willow is loveable and I really felt for her with everything she was having to endure.

Reece the male lead was one if these characters you’re never really sure of. You can see the goodness and badness within him and it’s obvious he is battling an internal conflict.

The story ended way to soon, I needed to read more and I can’t wait to read the sequel.

It had everything you want from a good book, romance, action, magic and humour.

I would highly recommend this book.

Thanks for reading.

Planner Girls Collective: Top Journaling Shops

Hey this week in the Planner Girls Collective we are looking at our favourite shops for planner, stationery and journaling supplies.

I have chosen to show you all my top 5 journaling supply shops.

To start with we have Little Rainbow Moon the owner Jo makes everything herself and offers a range of custom made items for journaling such as ephemera, cards, stickers and more. Her work is beautiful and excellent quality.

Next we have Mrs Brimbles again, the owner Anna creates her own artwork and offers it in various forms. Which gives a very unique quality to adding bits to my journal pages.

Then we move to the high street. The Works is fantastic for budget bits and pieces and they have a massive collection of items.

Hobbycraft is also a great place to find journaling items. They carry a large range and the prices aren’t too expensive either.
Lastly we have Hey Little Magpie this is an online only store but it has a larger range of supplies available than most others. Great if you’re looking for something very specific.

So that’s all of them. Please see the other girls for their posts and favourite shops.

Book Tour: Den Of Iniquity by Anabelle Bryant {Author Q & A}

My 2nd post this week for the Den Of Iniquity blog book tour comes in the form of a Q&A session with the author herself, Anabelle Bryant.

1) Where do you draw your inspiration for the characters of Vivienne and Max?

I love writing Regency and the strict rules of the time period have always appealed to me, but at the same time the restrictions are very confining. With my Bastards of London series, I wanted to create characters who had more freedom and regularly broke society’s rules without consequence. Max and Vivienne live on the fringe of better society and the novels blur the lines of traditional Regency romance. I drew inspiration from the better qualities of the time period, but also included characters who could go out unescorted, engage their sensuality and speak their mind without becoming outcasts…because they already are.

2) What inspired you to write a novel of this era?

I’ve always been enchanted with aristocracy. Dancing at a ball or flirting with a wicked earl lives in my imagination as if I could really experience it some day. Since no one has invented a time machine yet, I satisfy my longing for the time period by writing stories and inventing characters I wish I met in real life.

3) Do you forsee a future for Vivi and Max?

The Den of Iniquity is the first book of the new series, so Vivi and Max will be interwoven slightly as the novels move forward. Of course, they have their happily-ever-after at the end of book one, but life doesn’t always proceed seamlessly and readers should know I definitely see an interesting future for them both.

4) Do you have an aim for the amount of books there will be in this series?

Bastards of London is planned as a quartet, but I’ve already had the suggestion to write a novel for Sophie (Vivi’s best friend) so there very well may be a fifth book in the series.

5) What was your favourite novel as a child?

Ann of Green Gables is the first one to come to mind. I was always reading so given a few minutes, I could produce a long list of favorites.

6) What is your favourite novel as an adult?

I tend to have different favorites through different portions of my adult life. While in high school, I loved The Catcher in the Rye. Through college, I was all about Shakespeare. Once I started reading historical romance, I was done for and nothing has substituted since. Some of my favorites are novels by Sherry Thomas, Lisa Kleypas and Loretta Chase.

7) Do you have a place you specifically like to read?

I’ll read anywhere. Reading is my go-to activity even while I’m eating, but my favorite place would be my livingroom couch where there’s plenty of natural light.

8) Did you always want to become a writer?

I’m not sure becoming an author was always my goal. I studied education and love being a teacher, but what I do know is that I have always written, whether it is poetry, fiction or in a journal. At some point, my creativity and hobby of writing down my thoughts became so important that I realized I wanted to share my ideas with others.

9) Which authors do you admire the most?

There are so many! Sherry Thomas writes with such emotion I’m often crying through half the novel. Loretta Chase creates pageturners that keep me addicted to the story until its finished. Lisa Kleypas has created the most memorable Regency characters ever. I could keep going. There are many talented authors I admire.

10) If you could have dinner with any fictional literary character who would it be?

That’s not an easy question and the answer surprises me as well. When I consider all the sexy earls, dashing dukes and sensual rogues I’ve enjoyed through the years, I have to choose Cam from Lisa Kleypas’s Mine ’till Midnight. Ironically, he’s a Romanian gypsy and not part of the aristocracy at all! But he’s my favorite book boyfriend even hundreds of stories later.

A massive thank you to Anabelle for taking the time out to answer these questions. For more about the Den Of Iniquity you can see my previous post here where you will also find the links to purchase the book.

Book Review: Before The Snow by Danielle Paige

TitleBefore The Snow

Author: Danielle Paige

Publisher: Bloomsbury USA Children

Publication Date: 26th July 2016

Format: Kindle

Pages: 81

Rating : 4.5

The Blerb…

Enter a world of elemental magic, forbidden romance, and betrayal in this prequel to New York Times bestselling author Danielle Paige’s upcoming Stealing Snow.

Young Nepenthe is half-princess, half-mermaid. Though she longs for the sea, her father wants her to stay on land. But only love can make a mermaid give up the water, and Nepenthe doesn’t love anyone the way her mother loves her human father. She wants to live as a mermaid and become the River Witch, like her mother.

Then Nepenthe meets Prince Lazar, the son of the all-powerful Snow King of Algid, and she can’t help but fall for him. After a horrible tragedy strikes, Nepenthe joins forces with a young fire witch named Ora to save Lazar and protect the kingdom. But it soon becomes clear that Ora loves Lazar just as much as Nepenthe does… And now Nepenthe must decide: inherit the power of the River Witch, or betray her friend to be with the boy she loves.
And Nepenthe’s role in the prophecy is only just beginning. . . In the future, she is destined to cross paths with a girl named Snow, who will have the power to change Algid forever-for better, or for worse.

In all honesty I actually enjoyed this story more than Stealing Snow which was enjoyable in it’s own right. It was good to read more about Nepanthe and Ora’s history and how Lazar ended up being involved with Ora.

It does intrigue me with the ‘what if’ between Lazar and Nepanthe and whether the future for Algid would have been different should they have chose another path.

I’m looking forward to the 2nd Novella Rising Queen to see what else happens prior to Stealing Snow.

All in all it’s a light, easy and quick read and I would recommend it:)
