Book Review: Six Of Crows by Leigh Bardugo

Title:  Six Of Crows
Author: Leigh Bardugo

Publication Date: Orion Children’s Books

Page Count:  512

Publisher:  2nd June 2016

Rating: 5/5

Plot Overview:
Criminal prodigy Kaz Brekker is offered a chance at a deadly heist that could make him rich beyond his wildest dreams – but he can’t pull it off alone.

A convict with a thirst for revenge.
A sharpshooter who can’t walk away from a wager.
A runaway with a privileged past.
A spy known as the Wraith.
A Heartrender using her magic to survive the slums.
A thief with a gift for unlikely escapes.

Six dangerous outcasts. One impossible heist.

Kaz’s crew is the only thing that might stand between the world and destruction – if they don’t kill each other first.

Taken from Amazon UK

Well I am not quite sure where to start with this book. When I first started to read it I wasn’t sure if I would like it but within the first 2 chapters I was fully engrossed. I love the interaction between Kaz and his Dregs members. Particularly when it comes to Inej, who happens to be my favourite character.

The story is unpredictable and I couldn’t guess any part that was coming which made it a thrilling and surprising read. Learning the ways of the Grisha was also fascinating. I haven’t read Leigh Bardugo’s Grisha Trilogy so this was an entirely new thing for me but it has most definitely wet my appetite for more.

When Kaz is offered the big job I did suspect he would manage it but it was still a great read as I couldn’t have predicted how it would go. It took me no time at all to fly through the last few chapters. I had an awful conflict between wanting to find out the ending and not wanting it to end. I was really happy to discover the sequel Crooked Kingdom was actually released yesterday 27th September, which happens to be the day I finished it. As soon as I have read the other book commitments I have this is getting read.

Each of the characters brings something unique and intriguing to the story and I actually find myself liking each of them in their own way, they are a bunch of lovable rogues. The strained relationship between Nina and Matthias keeps you on your toes as does the friction with Kaz and Inej. Jesper and Wylan have a great witty relationship which is amuzing and keeps things light even when things get tough. I really hope to see more of this progression through the second book.

I got that into this book I even took a wander over to Grishaverse to discover what type of Grisha I was and which Six Of Crows character I was. I ended up and an Ethrealki and with Inej 🙂 I’d love to know what you get if you take the quiz too 🙂

My favourite quotes are
”The heart is an arrow, it demands ain to land true” Page 333

”When everyone knows you’re a monster you needn’t waste time doing every monstrous thing” Page 42

I am really looking forward to the sequel and to reading Leigh Bardugo’s Grisha trilogy.

Thanks for reading.

Fairyloot September Box: Magic and Mayhem

I heard of Fairyloot when I was doing research for my own bookish subscription and absolutely fell in love. Fairyloot is much more high end than the boxes I do and until now I’ve never had the chance to subscribe.

I ordered my box as soon as I possibly could on the 1st August. I had a long and impatient wait for it to be shipped late September.

Well I can say it was definitely worth the wait. I love it and will definitely be subscribing to these boxes on a more permanent basis for sure.

The box itself was fantastic with its fairyloot design and inner quote.

When I opened the box I was greeted to a mass of purple shredded paper and the note describing each of the items within the box.

I carefully unpacked the box and marvelled at the contents. Many of the items were based on the Grisha novels which was perfect since I am currently reading Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo.

I’ve got a couple of close up’s of my favourite items in this box.

The Candle by Castle of Fables – designed for the box in the scent of Corporalki from the Grisha books. I love the smell of this it reminds me somewhat a little of Snow Fairy from Lush.

This little necklace,  wow it’s super cute. Little Russian doll from Pastelclouds.

I am really looking forward to reading the book which was not only a hardback but also came with a signed sticker and matching bookmark from Behind The Pages.

The book is called  Vassa In The Night by Sarah Porter.

I would rate this box a 5/5.

I love the entirety of the contents and the effort put into the presentation.

If you would like to get your hands on a Fairyloot box you can do so here. Boxes are available for purchase on the 8th of the month but come in limited quanity and sell out very fast. I’ve missed the October Steampunk box but I’ll be waiting to get my hands on the November box Royals and Rogues.

Boxes cost £26 which is around £32 after shipping.

Confessions Of A Plannerholic: My Top Rated Must See Films

For this weeks instalment we are looking at our favourite all time most bestest films.

This was quite a difficult one for me as we were to pick 10, when I probably could have picked 100.

The List!

Breakfast Club (1985)- This is a perfect easy watch, feel good, teen angst film. One of my favourite songs plays out at the end as Judd Nelson fist pumps the air, with such a great sountrack how can one resist.

Everything about this film is great, I love to watch it when I’m not feeling 100%, it’s a rainy day or I’m bored. I must watch it at least twice a year.

Goonies (1985) – Another 80’s classic which shouldn’t surprise anyone since it’s my fav era. This is my ill film, whenever I’m sick it goes on. Ir reminds me of when I was a kid and layed up on the sofa with a blanket when I was poorly. It’s such a comforting film.

Legally Blonde (2001) – This film despite is feel good comedic value is actually quite inspiring. It fills me full of hope. Morale of the story…If Elle Woods can do it so can you! It’s just amazing!

Erin Brockovich (2000) – This film has it all. I laugh, I cry, I feel…it’s just brilliant from start to finish. The fact it’s based on a real story is just crazy, what the people must have suffered. Erin…seriously what a woman.

If you haven’t seen this I must advise you do! Now lol!

The Day After Tomorrow (2004) – I’m a bit of a disaster film nut which is great way to prepare for these events happening lol. I love this film, especially in the winter months all cosy and warm. Little bit of eye candy with the gorgeous Jake Gyllenhaaul who I love in every film he has done.

Practical Magic (1998) – This was thw year I left school and I saw this at the cinema so many times. At 16 I really thought I could make myself into a witch and be as awesome as these gals were. This is a great film and so funny 🙂

Pretty In Pink (1986) – One word…Ducky!  Man he gives me the feels. Why doesn’t she just be with him, he’s so sweet and funny. All the way through this film I still hope even though I’ve seen it a thousand times. Another 80’s classic from me:)

Revenant (2015) – What? A serious film! Yes I know but come on have you seen it? Absolutely magnificent!  Leo at his best and I actually hated Tom’s role in this film, what a nob! And that’s putting it mildly. I cried so hard through this but wow amazing. The cinematography was mind blowing.

Zodiac (2007) – Another Jakey film. I am obsessed over crime stories like this. Based on a real life story that occurred in America and still goes unresolved. It’s a great piece of work and portrays the darkness of the whole situation.

The Hills Have Eyes (2006) – One of my fav psychological thrillers. I can actually see this happening in real life and that is a scary prospect. The films was done brilliantly and always has me on the edge of my seat.

That’s my 10 and I hope that I’ve inspired you to sit and watch something epic.

I’d love to know what your favourite films are.

Thanks for reading and don’t forget to check the other girls out.

6 Months To Change My Life – 2nd Time Around

Those of you who have read my blog before are aware I have done this previously too. There is a group that I joined just over 6 months ago for the first set of goals. The aim is to set ourselves goals and aims to achieve over the next 6 months that go some way to improving the quality of our life. We all share experiences,  support and sometimes when needed a little constructive criticism.

I really enjoyed the last 6 months and feel I achieved a lot that I had set out to so it was a no brainer to start again for another 6 months with new goals.

This time I’ve set out my goals for what I want at the end of the 6 months and have broke them all down into monthly goals.

As of yet I’ve not drawn up my blog and career goals simply because I really want to have a huge focus on my home life and health this time. So I will update with those goals later this week.

I have wrote one primary focus down for October and will be using the tracker supplied in the new Carpe Diem. Each month I will chose a different high focus area to work on. I want to try and instill a habit over the 30 days so a tracker becomes unnecessary.

So let’s have a look at my goals;
1) Be More Positive – This is a big one. I always think I am positive but I admit lately it’s to easy to get bogged down and not appreciate things that perhaps I should. My aim here to to write down every single day at least 1 positive thing.

2) Lose 2 stone and eat better – Over the last 6 months I haven’t been as good as I should have.  I really want to shift the weight. This breaks down to 4lb a month, 1lb a week so I feel it’s achievable. My eating habits have started to slip back into snacky eating too so I need to reign it back in.

3) Organise The Paperwork – Given how organised I am in every area of my life this is one area I am not. I have 3 months if not more of filing to catch up on. I must get this done and a system in place.

4) Be More Financially Responsible – The biggest part of this is to stop emotionally spending. I also want to start paying more off my credit card each month to reduce this right down. With Birthdays and Christmas over these 6 months I need to spend much better than I do.

5) Have A Better Home Life – This is quite broad but covers things such as: more time offline, more time as a family,  date nights, sorting Alexis’s bedtime routine out again. Everything that has been not great over the last 6 months needs improving.

That’s it for my main goals. I may have only 5 but there are some biggies in there.

As you can see from the page below I have wrote these out and put them into my planner along with the monthly focus tasks.

UKPA although set out originally as a planner group is about so much more. The help and support from this group of people is massive.

This Savage Song: Book Review

Title: This Savage Song
Author: V.E Schwab

Publication Date: 7th June 2016

Page Count: 400

Publisher: Titan Books

Rating: 5/5

Plot Overview:

Kate Harker and August Flynn are the heirs to a divided city, a grisly metropolis where the violence has begun to create real and deadly monsters. All Kate wants is to be as ruthless as her father, who lets the monsters roam free and makes the inhabitants pay for his protection. August just wants to be human, as good-hearted as his own father but his curse is to be what the humans fear. The thin truce that keeps the Harker and Flynn families at peace is crumbling, and an assassination attempt forces Kate and August into a tenuous alliance. But how long will they survive in a city where no one is safe and monsters are real.

I had heard so much about this book that I was a little nervous to read it. I didn’t want to be let down when it had such good reviews. Needless to say the reviews were spot on, this was fantastic read. I enjoyed it from the first moment to the last and didn’t want to actually finish. It had everything you’d want from a gripping fantasy novel. There were twists and turns all the way. The characters were enjoyable and left you wanting to learn more about them. Kate behaves how she does to try and gain her father’s approval but under it all she has a heart, she isn’t that sort of person. August is just a little boy lost, he hates what he is and just wants to be normal, be human, he cherishes life and doesn’t want to take it even when it is a necessity. I wasn’t disappointed in the slightest. This will be one of those books that will remain on my shelf to be read time and time again.

My College Planner and Set-Up

As some of you may remember I posted about a month ago about how I was due to start college again in September and as struggling with what options were available.

Well now I have gone back and I have sorted my planner situation out.

Let’s have a look at what I opted for…

The Planner: Pause Large by Kikki-K

I received this planner in a swap and initially  had no idea what I was going to do with it. I wasn’t sure if I’d like it as my experience with Kikki-K planners has been a little hit and miss. My favourite is a Kikki-K but I have found most of there others planners are quite bulky without even adding the inserts.
However once I added all my bits and pieces to it, it turned out to be pretty perfect. It won’t fit much in there in the way of actual lesson work but I don’t intend on adding anythign like that other than Key Notes sheets. This is primarily as a diary and schedule keeper.

To compliment this I purchased a ARC disbound A5 notebook. This is perfect as they have both have the same colour scheme and I can add the A5 sheet into my planner if it is something that is important.

I really like this set up, it’s pretty, simple and effective.
Do you study? If so what are you using? I’d love to hear from you 🙂

Intercrossed: Book Review

The Blerb

What would you do if you knew the person you’d fallen for could endanger your life? A quiet, uneventful summer filled with supernatural combat training is what I expected when my mother dropped me off in the quiet city of Rome, Georgia. What I found was an adventure, unexpected dangers, and the one thing I swore off after my ex shattered my heart—love. Intercrossed is a young adult shifter novel filled with adventure, thrill, twists, and curves that’ll grip you till the last page.

I really enjoyed this book. It didn’t take me long to get through because I couldn’t put it down. I really like Maryelle, she was a great lead character. Reading how she progresses through the book and her interactions with those around her made me like her more. The developing romance was not to cheesy either which was nice to see. I really hope there will be a continuation with this story as I would love to see what happens with Maryelle and Phantom.

Great Read!

Confessions Of A Plannerholic: Autumn Planner Set-up

Today’s Confessions instalment is all about our Autumn Planner set-up.

I almost didn’t make this one as I was waiting the brand new Carpe Diem Reset Girl Ballerina planner to arrive after it’s release had been delayed a few times.

Luckily the postman brought me it this morning as Michelle at UglyBugDoes had posted them out first thing Friday.

I love the colour of this planner and while it isn’t the traditional orange or brown that most people go for I do love how cosy the pink is.

I’ve managed to set it up and aside from a couple of paperclips that I am waiting for it’s all ready to go:)

I will post pics of my set-up and links to the relevant shops.

Latest Stationery Haul

It has been a while since I have had a good old latest purchases post. I don’t buy stuff often anymore as I pretty much have all that I need however, at this time of the year I always get that urge to change it up a bit.

First off we have the amazing Goonies sticker kit from All Things Paper. I was so eager to use this kit that I don’t have a picture of all the stickers so I have taken a pic of them in use aswell as ones I’ve saved.

Next there are these beautiful foiled stickers from FiloFabulouss. Again I was impatient and ended up using a couple before I took pictures 🙂 The small weekend stickers were a freebie in my order.

Now let’s talk washi’s. I bought these gorgeous foiled washi from Jadiescrafts. They are brilliant quality too, perfect stickines and don’t leave any residue.

There is also this perfectly autumnal washi from A Beautiful Plan. Kelly sold out of this pretty quickly last time but has since restocked. It looks so pretty used. You can see how it looks in my previous post Confessions Of…Autumn Bucket List.

Next we have a little collection of items from Three Little Buhos. I ordered a Pen and some washi’s. I was also sent another washi and some Wizard of Oz stickers as freebies too.

Finally we have an autumnal ephemera kit that I ordered from the The Idea Owl sale. Donna over at The Idea Owl is actually closing her store to focus on selling subscription boxes primarily for penpals and TN enthusiasts.

So there you have it. There will be a few more of these posts in the comig weeks as I have stuff that is due to arrive any day now.

Confessions Of…Autumn Bucket List

There has been a slight change to our Confessions Of Series.  We have decided to include a variety of posts across on genres. Every two weeks however the post will be stationery and planner orientated.

Today’s post is a Bucket list, our Autumn Bucket list to be precise.

I love this time of year. From September to January is my time to shine so to speak. I adore everything about it so getting stuck into a bucket list wasn’t an issue for me. I made a whole dedicated page in my planner specifically for it.
Let’s take a look at my list before we look at the pretty page 🙂

1) Luxury Hot Chocolate. By this I mean totally indulgent full fat, loads of mallows and a sprinkling of chocolate type hot chocolate.

2) Start Knitting. This is a little deceiving as I do already know but haven’t done it for years so I’d like to pick it back up again.

3) Collect Leaves and Conkers. Pretty self explanatory love to collect these and acorns for autumn crafts.

4) Go on a Pinecone hunt. The kids and I love to collect these in Autumn ready to make winter crafts with.

5) Watch Serendipity.  I guess it’s more of a winter film but I watch it every year during Autumn. It’s a traditional thing.

6) Light a Sparkler. Autumn is is the season for Guy Fawkes and sparklers are a must. Any night they are beautiful and simple. They bring back great childhood memories.

7) Light a bonfire. This doesn’t just have to be for bonfire night. It’s great for any crisp chilly evening. What’s better than a cosy bonfire and hot chocolate!

Remember to have a perusal of the other ladies taking part in the Confessions series:)
